Large Format Exhibition Graphics Printed for Textured Museum Walls

For Field Notes from Begumpura at the Fowler Museum at UCLA, Classic Litho + Design produced a series of oversized wall graphics designed to become an integral part of the gallery environment.

The exhibition by artist Rahee Punyashloka imagines a future free from caste oppression through speculative “field notes” documenting the fictional city of Begumpura. Drawing from South Asian mural traditions and the visual languages of Dalit and Adivasi communities, the exhibition uses expansive imagery to help create an immersive environment across multiple galleries.

Reproducing that artwork at architectural scale required a large-format printing and finishing workflow capable of maintaining strong color, detail, and consistency across graphics extending approximately 10 feet high and, in several locations, more than 20 feet wide.

The wall graphics were printed on an HP Latex 830W using 3M™ IJ8624 Scotchcal™ Graphic Film for Textured Surfaces.

Designed specifically for application to moderately textured surfaces, IJ8624 makes it possible to bring high-impact printed graphics to walls and architectural environments where conventional graphic films may not be appropriate. For a museum installation like this one, the specialty material allowed the printed artwork to work with the physical gallery walls rather than being limited to traditional flat display panels.

After printing, the graphics were finished with 3M™ Envision™ Wrap Overlaminate 8550M using a SEAL laminator. The overlaminate provides an added layer of protection while its matte finish helps create a refined appearance appropriate for a gallery environment.

Final graphics were precision cut on our Zünd G3 3200 digital cutting system, allowing the individual pieces to be produced accurately to the dimensions required for each gallery wall.
